Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) is rumoured to be adapting Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed tome The Corrections for HBO.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Baumbach is developing the 568-page novel for executive producer Scott Rudin.

The book tells the story of the repressed Lambert family; parents Alfred and Enid, and their ruined children Gary, Chip and Denise. The narrative skips back and forth in time during the late twentieth century.

Rudin optioned the film rights for Franzen’s book back in 2001. In 2002, production almost began with Stephen Daldry in the director’s seat, Gene Hackman staring as the dying patriarch Alfred and Cate Blanchett as his daughter Denise. It fell apart, as did a number of other iterations over the next ten years.

HBO hit Game of Thrones has proven a book can be properly adapted as a one-off television season (it helps that there are multiple books for future Games of Thrones episodes to be adapted from). Even in Australia, we will soon see novel The Slap brought to TV screens as a series.

Deadline reports Anthony Hopkins is interested in playing Alfred.

Discuss: Any fans of Franzen’s novel out there?
